Watch Wanted: a Name for Baby Zebra - Rome Zoo Video Wanted: a Name for Baby Zebra - Rome Zoo
Jan 08, 2012
A four-day-old baby Grant's zebra has been braving the heat at Rome's zoo. Despite being well looked after by mum and dad, he is in desperate need of a name. A four-day-old, baby Grant's zebra was out roaming for the first time at a zoo in Rome on Wednesday. Braving the 93 degree Fahreneit heat, the little male zebra proudly showed off his brown stripes, distinctive for young zebras. The baby looked very much at home beside mum, Wendy, and dad, Chucky. But the young zebra is missing something - a name. The zoo is now launching an internet competition to pick a good name. Both parent zebras are from the Dutch safari park at Beekse Bergen, and baby zebra was born on July 9 two days before Holland took on Spain in the World Cup final... So the zoo expects a whole host of Dutch soccer players' names to be put forward. Whilst the Grant's zebra is not an endangered species, the zoo sees all births as important. [Yitzhak Yadid, Zoo Curator]: "Well some births are more important and some less, it depends what species we are talking about and it depends how endangered it is. Generally speaking breeding any animal in the zoo is important as we have to maintain certain numbers of animals due to the fact that European zoos and other zoos do not import from the wild." The baby zebra's name will be picked at the end of the month.

Watch AND AND "JENGO" IS HIS NAME-O!" New Calgary Zoo Giraffe gets a name
Jun 25, 2011
We are excited today to announce the winning Big name for our Big baby giraffe! JENGO was submitted by the Brade family of five who took some good family time and energy to research the perfect name for the curious and independent new zoo addition. Eight other entries were for the same name but Mona, Bill and Colleen were impressed by the explanation given by the Brade family. The family became instant media stars today and will be treated to a behind the scenes tour with giraffes down the road....even though they had a sneak peek today! Over 3200 entries were submitted. "After hearing about the naming contest for the new male giraffe we knew that the name had to be BIG for the Big Baby Boy! We did some research, both on the new male giraffe and on appropriate names for him, the best name that we could come up with together was "JENGO". There are a number of reasons we chose this name, first Jengo is a simple but yet unique name that will be easy for the Zoo staff and his keepers to use as well as for the many visitors the Zoo hosts each day, especially children. The name Jengo is from the African culture which is important to the Zoo in keeping with the animals' origins. According to our research the name Jengo has two meanings which are both very fitting. The first meaning is strength and building...how appropriate as he was born the Zoo's tallest and biggest and with his personality traits; intelligent, curious and independent, these are all characteristics of an ...

Dublin Zoo announced the name of the female giraffe calf that was born in Dublin Zoo on 4th January. Following a nationwide competition to find a name for the young giraffe, Neema meaning prosperous in Swahili, was chosen. Lucy Blacker, aged 6, from Swords in Co. Dublin was selected as the lucky winner! Speaking about the competition earlier today, Helen Clarke, team leader at the African Plains said, We had a really fantastic response to the competition. It was clear that a lot of effort went into the entries. Some entrants even sent us lovely giraffe drawings. There were some really fantastic African names entered but our team agreed that Neema meaning born into prosperity, was the most fitting name for our new giraffe calf! She is doing really well since birth and is quite genuinely prospering! Winner of the competition, 6 year old Lucy Blacker said, My teacher gave us homework to pick a name for the baby giraffe. It was so much fun. I asked my mum and my dad to help me. I love coming to Dublin Zoo and I cant wait to see Neema and call her by her new name!. Neema is thriving since her arrival and is already standing tall at 2 metres and weighing 50 kilograms! Her mother Jenny has been very attentive to Neemas needs since her arrival and Neemas older brother has been imitating his sister and has even been seeking milk from his mother! Neema can be seen in the African Plains with the other six members of the giraffe herd at Dublin Zoo.

Their names Sakti, Kartika and Kembali mean 'invincible, or powerful', 'the great' and 'return'. Each cub has developed a distinctive personality and Kartika, the female, is really cheeky, with a lot of attitude and is the first one to check out new things. Sakti and Kembali, the males, are more cautious, but they're growing in confidence. Born at Taronga Zoo in the early hours of Saturday 27th August, these cubs provide a valuable boost to this critically endangered species -- as few as 400 Sumatran Tigers are left in the wild.
